It did work last time I used it, but that was a few years back so I'm not sure it's very conclusive.

Oh, "a few years back"....Nic, it's likely that old dog has died.

Last summer I build a rig for a friend who was low on cash.
I had a couple of older SATA drives that had been laying around for a couple of years.
Both had the appearance of working....both died quickly and within a couple of weeks.

Not saying this is the same as yours...just saying it's disturbingly similar...

I sure hope that's not the case for you....though, I think/believe it may be.

Best thing you can do is check the drive for errors...see what the report says...

Give me a couple of minutes and I'll try to find ya some freeware to check it....be right back.

Don't be in a hurry it's late and I'm going to have to wake up early tomorrow. I won't try again tonight...

But thanks for the help. I'll try to list quickly what I have on it and I'll dl it again I guess.

BTW.. I know a guy on another forum that is a certified computer guru! (he works for Google) I can act as a middle man between the two of you if you like.
Barring that, just take your rig to a shop for professional repair ... that way they can plant a homing device in it!
I heard your proctologist planted yours. Did you enjoy? :P

Nic the link below will give you some ideas using the resources you currently have on your computer.
I would try this first and see what happens/occurs?

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001091.htm

This info below is from the link above...I suggest you read the entire link.

Scandisk - Users running Microsoft Windows who're still able to get into Windows can utilize the already installed disk checking tool Scandisk to find and repair any errors on their hard drive.

Chkdsk - Another Windows command line utility to test the hard drive. If you're unable to boot into Windows, boot from the Windows CD enter the recovery console and run: chkdsk /f to fix errors.

TestDisk - Fantastic free and open source utility to test and fix different hard drive errors.
Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (DFT) - Great third-party utility that can be used with most hard drives and supports the option to create a bootable CD image.

Seagate SeaTools - Fantastic and free program that is used to test all computer hard drives.

HDD health - Another great program that utilizes S.M.A.R.T technology to display a hard drive's statistics, such as the temperature of the drive, it's overall health, and every other SMART attribute.

Should your hard drive prove to be "bad"? I'd feel really good if ya donated it to the nearest mosque. ;)
Should it prove to be good? I'd never trust it for anything important. Just my opinion, based upon experience.

Good Luck and holler back....

Because there probably aren't any.
Go back and look at your formatting.

You also said that the old drive is from an old computer.
What's the operating system on the old drive?
