Back in the day (40 years ago) revolvers were the rule and six shots was the standard before having to reload.
The average hit percentage with cops in shoot outs was 1 hit for every 7 shots fired. Most cops carried on their person six in the gun and twelve on the belt. Very few carried more ammo or a 'back up' gun.

My personal/professional average is 21 of 23 shots fired. Prolly has something to do with me shooting between twenty and thirty thousand rounds a month for the first three years when I worked in Houston. Thirtyeight caliber ammo was a penny a round and fortyfives were a penny and a half. I shot more that the entire police department put together and was totally hated at the pistol range. The folks who went/worked there...went there to retire...quietly and there I was nearly every day making noise. ;)

I began carrying a 1911 after my first year and carried two additional mags on my belt and six more in a bag on the front seat. Also had a .380, always, in my right front shirt pocket loaded with six and an additional mag for it in my left front pants pocket. The .380 was loaded with "KTW" ammo.

Everybody has their own point of view and experiences to back it.
I'm saying from my experiences that toting that much ammo on your person is ridiculous and IMHO dangerous.
A cop is far more likely to get his ass whipped, gun taken away and shot in the head.....than he is to be in a 'sustained' fire fight that would require that much ammo.

Hope I didn't bore ya? :)
