Mules are tougher. They live longer and have less medical problems than horses. Of course they are more sure footed, but that's a given that most know about. They're also stronger if you need them to haul or plow.

I also love the big ears.

Stylish? Cmon...

Fred is a fine-looking animal.
Seriously, though, Buzz.....you touch on something here, with this whole thing about surviving in a harsh world. Truth be told, none of us would live long or well, despite any individual skill-set. That is where man,
all men, need a society. You can hunt well, your neighbor can grow crops, someone else gathers firewood,
someone else can raise food animals, etc. By working together, sharing and covering each other's asses, you will ALL survive longer and better. That is the principle that guides a society. That is the principle upon which our nation, and all successful nations, work. Man is, and always has been, a social being. Anthopology shows that, archeology proves it. Many in our society have lost sight of the benefits of all working for the common good. We have become far too selfish as a people. And, that fact alone could doom us as a nation.

I don't see any real problem with that. Sure we have the unemployed, or underemployed. Are you suggesting that huge numbers of folks aren't working on purpose? If so, I will suggest you are crazy.

Slick..........I agree that the majority couldn't completely survive alone. I wouldn't say that none couldn't. I feel that I could, and i'm certainly not alone. A lot of comfort would have to be given up, but I don't find it that much of a hardship when survival is on the line.

Being free of hunting/fishing seasons/limits and other laws opens up a lot more food.

Indeed, and everyone and their aunt will be doing the same for a while until there is less to hunt or fish, and more people competing for it.

I'm not a great fan of how society on the whole has turned out, it could have been a lot better, but right now it's better than the alternatives.

Agriculture was the trigger for humans to ascend, that and being able to store grain etc for when the crops failed. Prior to that humans generally lived hand to mouth in small groups. Having to store crops meant having to count them which in turn led to arithmetic and mathematics and engineering and so on.

You can live outside society as an individual, but you will still depend on stuff that is made and produced by others.

Exactly. Survivalism is all fine and dandy.....but there isn't enough food to go around in the first place. (Ted Nugent saw to that)
That's why I'm stocking up on canned beans and instant oatmeal! 8-)
