I believe the original loading for the .303 was something like a 220gr back in the day.
The Brit's got to bitching about the recoil....the Germans had the 8mm with a lighter, flatter shooting bullet....so, the Brits adopted a lighter bullet load, probably the 174gr you mentioned. No shame, we did the exact same with our 30-06 went down to 150-148gr rounds.
I did like the "can"....
