A guest on my porch....

Post by callmeslick »

....well, I'm stuck at home today, again. Local interstates are about as safe to drive on as the bobsled run at the Vancouver Olympics! Anyhow, I'm just chilling in the family room, listening to Mingus' "Tijuana Moods" to feel a bit warmer, when this fellow lands on the deck railing:

a quick check reveals it to be a Sharp-Shinned Hawk, fond of seeking out bird feeders(there are two to his
immediate right), and finding easy feathered meals. Pretty neat bird, about 20 inches tall, or a wee bit more.
I'll probably send the dog out to shoo him away, and give the Cardinals, Doves, Sparrows and Juncoes some
peace in the snowstorm. Still, pretty awesome to see, close up. The red eyes just look wicked......

Nice hawk. We usually see a lot of red-tails around here.

There's a pair of those that hang out in the tree out front quite often.
Every now and then I watch them take a pigeon.

we get redtails as well, but generally flyovers, or WAY up in my taller trees. FWIW, I sent the dog out to
get him away from the feeders after he dined on one sparrow. It will be interesting to see if he returns.
